Emotional Support Dogs
What is an Emotional Support Dog?
There is no such thing as an Emotional Support Dog in Australia, that is a legal definition used in the USA about a type of dog that is a pet for disabled people. In the USA these pets are allowed to live in pet prohibited housing and access the cabin of an aircraft, however that is all they are allowed to do above and beyond the rights given to any pet dog. An Emotional Support Dog has no task training and simply provides companionship.
Here in Australia they are the same as a pet dog with no special access privileges such as access to the cabin of an aircraft or in other pets prohibited places.
If a dog is specifically trained to the standards of behaviour for an animal in a public place and is trained to help with a persons disability some how including supporting someone who requires emotional support then that dog would be considered an assistance dog.
